Thanks to the extraordinary contribution of students, the University of Milan has established a network of tutors committed to encouraging, facilitating and supporting the start and continuation of the university career of people confined in and around the city’s penitentiary facilities. Prison tutoring is normally recognized by degree programs as an educational activity within the curriculum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The figure of the tutor is fundamental in the practical translation of the right to study, as it obviates most of the limitations that characterize the prison condition. In concrete terms, the tutoring activity consists of supporting the study of a restricted student and translates into building an effective study method, assisting in the preparation of exams, and managing educational materials between the prison and the University Libraries. The tutor follows the restricted student every step of the way in his or her studies; he or she helps him or her choose exams, brings him or her the materials or notes needed to prepare for them, and helps him or her in studying and reviewing for exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The network of tutors-across the different disciplines of origin-has grown considerably in recent years in both quantitative and qualitative terms, becoming an important point of reference even at the national level. In fact, the intense activity in the field has made it possible to gather a considerable wealth of knowledge and experience, unique in the Italian panorama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
