The Prison Project Office of the State University of Milan has the priority objective of contributing to the protection and promotion of the rights – especially the right to study – of people in detention or subject to measures limiting their personal freedom, in order to promote their participation in social life and thus contributing to their reintegration into the community, in deference to Article 27 of the Constitution. The tasks of the Office are characterized by a strong transversality and intersect with the activities carried out by different structures of the University and with a network of external interlocutors. They are, in particular, aimed at:
- Selecting, training, inducting and ensuring the coordination of the entire network of educational tutors, committed to supporting the start-up and university path of people confined in the city’s penitentiary facilities or in external criminal execution;
- Ensure coordination with the University Directorates and Centers;
- Manage the relationship and communications with the Regional Proveditorate of Penitentiary Administration (PRAP), the Court of Milan, the Directors and Pedagogical Areas of all penitentiary institutes in which the Project is active, the Prisons Subcommittee of the Municipality of Milan, the National Conference of Penitentiary University Poles (CNUPP), the referents of the international network of Universities with a project aimed at prisons;
- To monitor the pathways of restricted students, as well as periodically acquire their opinion about any actions to be taken to increase the effectiveness of the Project, in synergy with the Observatory for the Right to University Study in Prison.
